Short intro

This live recording, his very first, was made in 2005 over several nights at the Village Vanguard, with Valdés at the age of 86. The pianist's powerful left hand makes it superfluous for him to have a percussionist his sole accompanist is bassist Javier Colina, a gifted partner who weaves intricate lines with Valdés. Though the music is dominated by Cuban rhythms, this live CD is hardly one-dimensional in scope. Album 2007 14 Songs. Ritmando el Cha-Cha-Cha Live. Bebo Valdés is the last remaining giant from the Golden Age of Cuban music. In 1952 he recorded for American producer Norman Granz the first Cuban Jazz jam session in Havana. His big band, Sabor de Cuba, was one of the island's finest. Additionally, he was pianist for the Tropicana orchestra, and music consultant for the fabled cabaret. He performed on Nat King Cole's best-selling album Cole Español, and taught the American vocalist how to sing in Spanish. His current U. release, Live At The Village Vanguard, recorded with Spanish bassist Javier Colina, is presently nominated for a Latin Grammy. Valdés turned 90 on October 9th, 2008. Track Listings. This October, Cuban pianist Bebo Valdes will celebrate his 90th birthday. Valdes is best-known to US jazz fans from his star turn in the documentary Calle 54, which captured so many great Latin Jazz players in a New York studio. Older folks may know that Valdes was the leader of the famous pre-Castro Havana nightclub, the Tropicana, during the 1950s. More recently, Valdes has been living in Sweden and Spain. It mainly consists of classic Cuban tunes some by Valdes himself played with an ambling ease. Like Jones, Bebo started as an accompanist, only to shine as a soloist in his later years. Now nearly 90, his music just seems to get better and better. This session is his recording at the Village Vanguard, the jazz mecca in New York. Accompanying Valdés is his favorite bassist, Javier Colina. And like Jones, his simple charm and dignity is ever present in his music making. The lushness of his touch pervades this recording as the audience shows its enthusiasm throughout. He plays three originals, some pop covers, Cuban classics and the familiar jazz standards Yesterdays a
