Audioslave is the debut studio album by American rock supergroup Audioslave. It was first released on November 18, 2002, through Epic Records and Interscope Records. The album features the hit singles Cochise, Show Me How to Live, What You Are, Like a Stone, and I Am the Highway. The album was later certified 3x platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America in the United States. Like a Stone was nominated for a 2004 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance. The album's music is strongly reminiscent of Rage Against the Machine, with Chris Cornell providing his familiar classic rock-esque wails and croons to the songs. About Audioslave. Much to the dismay of guitarist Tom Morello, the album was leaked to some file-sharing networks on May 16, 2002, months before the release of the album. Tom said that the songs were not in their finished form and that in some cases they werent even the same lyrics, guitar solo. His muted yet varied solo album proved that he needed muscle, but here it's all muscle, no texture or color. Consequently, many of the songs sound like they're just on the verge of achieving liftoff, never quite reaching their potential. There are moments, usually arriving in the first half, where Audioslave suddenly, inexplicably clicks, sounding like a band, not a marketer's grand scheme. Audioslave was formed after Zack de la Rocha left Rage Against the Machine and the remaining members were searching for another vocalist. Producer and friend Rick Rubin suggested that they contact Chris Cornell. Rubin played the remaining Rage Against the Machine band members the Soundgarden song Slaves & Bulldozers to showcase his ability. Galvanised by their initial session, the newly-christened Audioslave wrote over 20 songs during three weeks of intensive rehearsals, meaning they could enter the studio to begin recording with Rick Rubin during the summer of 2001. With the sessions shuttling between Seattle and California, the initial impetus slowed, but by the summer of 2002, the album was complete and sounding very promising indeed.
