He moved to the United States in 1921, toward the end of the TurkishGreek conflict during the last phase of the collapse of the Ottoman Empire and establishment of modern Turkey. In 1927 he recorded an early version of the song Miserlou, Misirlou. It's likely that he was familiar with the song, as a folk song, before he moved to read more. It's unclear exactly when he was born. Estimates range from 1897 to 1901. He was born in Constantinople the Greek name for Istanbul. He moved to the United States in 1921, which is where he was living at the time he recorded Misirlou. He died in New Jersey in 1971 from throat cancer.
