Short intro

Daoust further combines elements of musique concrete into these works. As the works of Beethoven and Bach are now culturally dissipated into commercials and film scores, Daoust diffuses these themes into a sonic kaleidoscope of environmental sounds and samples. The samples are truly mundane, but taken out of context and placed on the canvas of instrumental flotsam, they become mysterious and full of meaning. I'm usually very dubious about albums, in the contemporary electronics field, that lists compositions as 'piano and tape' or 'flute and tape', as so many a time one is confronted with the utmost level of artistic and sonic tedium. Witness hoards of Nonesuch label albums, INA.GRM's SAX COMPUTER, or even emprientes DIGITALes' own ACTION/ REACTION by Daniel Schiedt - tedium!
Daoust however, is an accomplished composer of great virtuosity, and thus his music doesn't just consist of unrelated elements placed together, it consists of carefully structured sound fabrics that meld, counterpoint, react, and move in a fascinating way.
The eight tracks on this lengthy disc are all very different. First I suppose I should discuss Suite Baroque (tracks 1, 3, 5 and 7 on the disc) which acts as counterpoints to the longer tracks, comprising of complex tape montage work that features harpsichord, voices, sound effects. Programming the suite to play on its own it comes very close to some of Luc Ferrari's most accomplished work, and I'm also reminded on many occasions of Jocelyn Robert's STAT LIVE MONITEUR. Fascinatingly bizarre: Petite Musique Sentimentale blends a Debusy-like piano theme with all manner of recorded sounds, kind of an audio movie where the listener has to imagine the story! Adagio, which features flute, is a similarly fragmentary piece, but with more dynamics. l'Entrevue, quoted as for 'accordion and tape', actually features a montaged interview above everything else, and as such comes across like a strange concoction of Pauline Oliveros and Nurse With Wound's Registered Nurse! The album's magnum opus: Quator is, of course, saved till last. Totally a tape work, it is sonically both bombastic and ethereal, and dramatic to extremes. In it, sounds are twisted, mashed, drawn-out, modulated, in ways similar to Parmegiani, where it's impossible to recognise the sounds used.
Overall, Daoust's ANECDOTES is a fascinating compendium of his works, and a fine addition to this excellent label.
