Universalists is the second full-length studio album by Yonatan Gat released in 2018 on Joyful Noise Recordings. Gal Lazer plays drums, and Sergio Sayeg is on bass. The album was produced by David Berman of the Silver Jews and by Gat himself. Other personnel involved with the album's production included Kevin McMahon, Calvin Johnson Beat Happening, Thor Harris Swans and many others. Yonatan Gat's Universalists presents a bold new idea for what to do with rock: treat your own band noise like other people's samples and weave it into something bigger. Gat, late of Tel Aviv's Monotonix and now based in New York, spends a lot of this record kicking up clouds of guitar dust with drummer Gal Lazer and bassist Sergio Sayeg. Maybe that's an album you haven't thought about in a long time, and indeed the Universalists philosophy is closer to something you might encounter in the post-mp3, pre-Pandora days when the limitlessness of the Internet threatened to end the tyranny of genres and po-mo pranksters like Girl Talk, DJrupture, and . ruled the world. Yonatan Gat is a guitarist, producer and experimental composer based in NYC. Gat became known as one of the world's top performers as founder and guitarist of Monotonix, hailed by SPIN as the most exciting live band in rocknroll, with concerts that destroyed the border between performer and audience, and were controversial enough to get them banned from playing their home country of Israel. Gat then relocated to New York City. Three years on, Gat returns with Universalists, an album that marks an ambitious and expansive next step. As on Director, Universalists once again showcases the muscular trio of Gat on guitar, Gal Lazer on drums, and Sergio Sayeg on bass.
