Víctor Pablo Pérez conducted the premiere of Bric à Brac, Montsalvatge's last orchestral score, in 1993, so its inclusion in his overview of the maverick Catalan's work for Naxos's Spanish Classics series was perhaps inevitable. With its closing neo-classical gallop seemingly at odds with the impressionistic opening movements, it's not his best piece, and you get a greater sense of Montsalvatge's range from its two companions. The 1983 Simfonia de Rèquiem for soprano, strings, brass and percussion confronts mortality with austere resignation. The performances are admirably clear-textured: the Barcelona Symphony, as one might expect, have this music in their systems.
