The Midnight Mover, issued in 1968, was one of a pair of albums Wilson Pickett issued that year produced by the mighty Tom Dowd. The title track, a signature growler, was written by Wilson with Bobby Womack. The other includes I Found a True Love, issued earlier in two parts on 1967's The Sound of Wilson Pickett. Womack wrote about half the set. The Midnight Mover is one of the more diverse offerings of Pickett's from the 1960s. The Midnight Mover is ranked 29,410th in the overall chart, 1,765th in the 1960s, and 306th in the year 1968. It includes I'm Gonna Cry, which was recorded and released as a single in 1964, and its backing track For Better Or Worse they're out of place here in 1968. And of course, there's Deborah, a strange track that morphs between a soul-stomp and a fado-sounding ballad that he sings in Italian, with an elaborate arrangement, very sophisticated I'm sure. Pickett recorded several tracks in 1972 for a planned new album on Atlantic, but after the single Funk Factory reached No. 11 R&B and No. 58 pop in June 1972, he left Atlantic for RCA Records. His final Atlantic single, a recording of Randy Newman's Mama Told Me Not to Come, was culled from Pickett's 1971 album Don't Knock My Love. However, six years later, the Big Tree division of Atlantic released his album, Funky Situation, in 1978.
