Short intro
Johannes Brahms. Wilhelm Furtwängler. Andante sostenuto. Un poco allegretto e grazioso. The Variations on a Theme by Joseph Haydn, German: Variationen über ein Thema von Jos. Haydn, now also called the Saint Anthony Variations, is a work in the form of a theme and variations, composed by Johannes Brahms in the summer of 1873 at Tutzing in Bavaria. It consists of a theme in B major based on a Chorale St Antoni, eight variations, and a finale. The work was published in two versions: for two pianos, written first but designated Op. 56b and for orchestra, designated Op. Johannes Brahms : Symphony No3 - I. Allegro con brio, 09:29. I first heard the Haydn variations in college. The recording was out of press and I couldn't afford a copy anyway. Thirty years later I found them again on this CD, which of course was promptly stolen out of my car. One of the variations sounds like the wind picking up over the Panamint Mountains in the Mojave Desert. Gardiner, John Eliot. Gergiev, Valery. Mackerras highly regarded Telarc Brahms cycle bills itself as being in the style of the original Meiningen performances. This claim is, of course, nonsense, if only because of the word original. The Brahms tradition there preceded him by at least two conductors, and could have been quite Read more different when it did. Nevertheless, we can say that Steinbachs notes, if accurately transcribed by Blume, represent an authentic Brahms tradition, and they are quite interesting. For one, they make it clear that Steinbachs approach to tempo and accent was much freer than usual today.
