So after last year's orchestral extravaganza Marinai, profeti e balene, the Italian Tom Waits he's even got Ribot on board for a couple of songs has taken a small band of musicians into an analogue studio to produce this warm, robust tribute to the Greek rebetiko style. Vinicio Capossela has spent most of this year bringing his music outside of Italy. However, Spain is not the only place Vinicio visited. As his album was re-released there, gigs were scheduled in Germany, Greece, Switzerland, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, and even Canada and United States in May with a stunning live set at New Yorks Joes Pub. Last April Capossela performed in Greece for the first time. Vinicio Capossela born 14 December 1965 is an Italian singer-songwriter. Capossela is renowned for the highly original and poetic lyrics of his songs. Many of them draw from traditions of Italian folk music, especially those of his parent's native Irpinia, part of the Campania province. Some of his songs - especially in the album Marinai, profeti e balene Sailors, Prophets and Whales - are inspired on world themes and legends Canzone a manovella, Medusa and world literature, such as Homer. Why Vinicio Capossela is termed Italy's Tom Waits is a puzzle. Yes, he plays with Waits's guitarist Marc Ribot, but he's no growler, more a romantic crooner and musical wayfarer. Here, he pays tribute to rebetiko, the swaying, strutting urban folk spawned in Hellenic ports, with bouzouki and accordion the signature instruments. Employing Athens's finest players, Capossela reprises old songs such as Morna and Con Una Rosa, adding new material and Greek standards.
