Short intro

This album from Shanachie showcases the greatest female jive artists of South Africa. What that really amounts to is a greatest-hits album for the Mahotella Queens. The jive styles were started by the Dark City Sisters in the '60s with two songs presented on the album, and the torch was then passed on to the Mahotella collective with Mahlathini, to the delight of many a listener. His Duck Rock album is seen as a seminal effort in promoting New York hip hop culture and it does, but every backing track was stolen from African musicians, several originals of which are on Soweto Never Sleeps. Soweto Never Sleeps Shanachie, c. 1988, total running time 33:20, is an excellent, but alas out of print, compilation of female Zulu jive or mbaqanga music popular in South Africa in the 60's and 70's and brought to international attention and acclaim through the Mahotella Queens' appearance on Paul Simon's watershed 1986 album, Graceland.
