The set, which features the first official stereo versions of a number of tracks on CD, was released in late 2004. The CDs were mastered from submaster tapes from the Capitol Records vaults which were prepared by Capitol A&R executive Dave Dexter, Jr. who added reverb to several tracks and simulated stereo fake stereo on mono tracks. The sound is of the highest caliber and, as expected, the quality and vitality of interpretation is second to none. An amazing recording well worth your money. The music from Hamlet' was composed for a 1964 Russian version of the Shakespeare story, translated by Boris Pasternak. But several of the shorter selections from The Counterplan, The Great Citizen, Sofia Perovskaya, Pirogov and The Gadfly are absolutely riveting the fiery scherzo from Pirogov is just an example among many. An absolutely enchanting disc of gorgeous, utterly attractive music in wonderful performances and well-defined, crystal clear sound. Recommended with all possible enthusiasm.
