I-Roy and U-Roy, two of the most original DJ's to emerge from the stable of the legendary King Tubby, I-Roy and U-Roy laid the foundations for DJ music as it is today. Born Edward Beckford in 1936, U-Roy was heavily influenced during his youth by Count Machuke, one of Jamaica's earliest DJs. He began playing with Dickie's Dynamic, but it wasn't until he began recording with King Tubby that he really began to carve a name for himself.
"Wear You To The Ball", "Wake The Town" and "Rule The Nation" held the top three places on both Jamaican reggae stations for several weeks.
I-Roy's success was to come a few years later. Although he began DJ-ing with the "Sounds Junior" system, and released "Musical Pleasure" in 1970, followed by "The Drifter" and "Let me Tell You Baby", his biggest hit came in '75 with Trojan's release of the album "Presenting I-Roy" - Angela Ackah.
