Tough times in 1989, compact discs were taking over the market, yet there were still many who were playing the vinyl, marking a huge change in how not only bands, but the record companies pushed the product. The album Today was first released on vinyl, and from that release come the stunning single “Tugboat” which was released as a blue vinyl 45, and re-released here in the States on black vinyl ... with both being highly sought after, and command serious money. After that, little was done to promote Galaxie 500’s first album by the record label. Be that as it may, there were several releases on 7 inch discs from fanzine [fan] magazines. “Oblivion” a poppy little tune filled with jangling guitars, a brisk pace, and vocals that hight higher notes than I ever will, inspiring all who heard it to sing right along, is a lovely example, which also featured “Something New In The Ring” by Half Japanese, “Cave In,” by Great Plains, “Casper The Friendly Ghost,” by Daniel Johnston, and “Voting Is For Suckers,” by Mofugo. All this can be found on the Chemical Imbalance fanzine Issue No. 8, issued in 1989 as a 7 inch 33 1/3.
