Indeed Over the past two years he's released records more often than most people do laundry, but somehow there is still a heap of anticipation for this new album on Goner packed full of truly psychedelic pop song. Garage-rock hero Ty Segall cuts a happily frazzled figure on this 2010 album. Between the loopy psych-pop impulses of Caesar and the primitive riff-bashing of My Sunshine, the California native seems right at home in this lo-fi primordial soup. But thats not to say he lacks ambition simply look to the handclapping glam-punk overdrive of Girlfriend or the considered sweetness of the ramshackle pop study Bees. The songs My Sunshine and Caesar were officially released as singles, and Girlfriend had an official music video. Melted received acclaim from contemporary music critics. Someone must have dropped some acid into Ty Segall's lo-fi garage rock beverage, since his third solo effort, Melted, sounds noticeably noisier, trippier, and more damaged than his previous efforts. Segall's feel for a simple, sturdy melody hasn't escaped him, but the tunes often drift in and out of clouds of sound effects, percussive jams, guitar feedback, or keyboard drones, and a warm layer of pushed-to-the-red distortion surrounds most of the drums and instrumental tracks. Melted, his latest, boasts a 30-minute runtime that feels closer to 15. Segall gets in, gets out, and gets it done nearly every time. Melted kicks off with quite the 1-2-3-4 punch: the swarming Finger, the strummy Caesar, the bopalong Girlfriend, the two-faced Sad Fuzz. Melted gets a little soft in the middle, its title track lost in a sea of haze, Mike D's Coke coming off almost like a third-rate Ariel Pink number. The tracks exhibit a little more range than his Buddy Hollyearly KinksRamones triangulation, but they don't hit as hard, slowing the record's momentum.
