Short intro

Essential: a masterpiece of progressive rock music7. TRAVELLING were a trio from France who released only one album1973. The organ and piano dominates their sound that is without question Canterbury flavoured. SOFT MACHINE had to be an influence on these guys as the vocal style and fuzz organ certainly bring them to mind. Voici La Nuit Tombee is an 18 minute ride that I have taken over and over again this past week. It opens with cymbals and bass before the organ quickly joins the fray, and it sounds fantastic. A full sound before a minute that includes piano, fuzz organ, bass and drums. The album's tour-de-force is side one's Voici La Nuit Tombee itself, at 19'35 it's long for a French work of the period, which strongly features Hasselmann's distorted keyboards as the focus in a complex suite and the only actual song of the album at its core. The five tracks that covered side two were all different, Flamenco not a Flamenco at all kind of predates Robert Wyatt's Rock Bottom feel with its multi-piano phrasings and sleazy jazzy beat and Wyatt daddly-da-de- daaa before it goes off on a complex classical walkabout, moving seamless. Tracklist Voici la nuit tombé is a keyboard based trio that probably represents best what the mythical Futura label's RED series was about jazz, rock and experimental inquisitiveness. Often considered as the French answer to the Canterbury movement, echoes of Soft Machine, Caravan and Supersister can be heard on the sidelong opening track 'Voici la nuit tombée', the album's tour de force , with its fuzz bass, distorted organs, piano jazz and complex meters elements. First time vinyl reissue of this 1973 pioneering prog jewel fully licenced by Gérard Terronès

Review from my Futura feature in Audion #46 (2002)...Much touted as a French answer to Caravan, this was always one album I was eager to hear, as when the French go Canterbury-esque they always do it with that strangely Gallic finesse (c.f. Ame Son, Moving Gelatine Plates, Forgas) adding something uniquely their own. In essence, aside from the Caravan edge, they were much more a Soft Machine cum Egg type trio, with slightly Robert Wyatt-like vocals from Yves Hasselmann (also on piano and organ) and an almost Supersister feel in the rhythm section: Jacques Goure (bass) and Roger Gremillot (drums). The album's tour-de-force is side one's Voici La Nuit Tombee itself, at 19'35" it's long for a French work of the period, which strongly features Hasselmann's distorted keyboards as the focus in a complex suite and the only actual song of the album at its core. The five tracks that covered side two were all different, Flamenco (not a Flamenco at all) kind of predates Robert Wyatt's Rock Bottom feel with its multi-piano phrasings and sleazy jazzy beat and Wyatt "daddly-da-de-- daaa" before it goes off on a complex classical walkabout, moving seamlessly into Passo to the jazzy Soleil to the mini keyboard symphony Tout Compte Fait to lightly Magma edged Shema where we return to the theme of Flamenco, which pretty much means side two was a one-side work as well.Distinctly 70's pioneering prog (recorded on 5 February 1973, to be precise), it's both quaintly dated and simultaneously fresh today, and a definite "must hear".

This is a great example of the rocking side of the Futura label, and one of the few RED releases. The music is typical for the 1973 Prog rock, but is VERY well executed. The leader of Travelling, keyboardist/vocalist Yves Hasselmann created a beautiful, ethereal soundscape that starts with a side-long title compoition, followed by 5 pieces on side two. The setiing is rather minimalist (keyboards, bass, and drums), but the result is quite compelling. For sure, one of the better French prog rock items. Unfortunately, only one release, as far as I know.
