Traffic - Dear Mr. Total votes: 1. Hole in My Shoe is a song by English rock band Traffic featuring a spoken-word midsection by Chris Blackwell's stepdaughter, Francine Heimann, where she told a little story about a giant albatross. It was released as a single in 1967 and reached number 2 in the UK Singles Chart, number 22 in the German charts, and number 4 in Canada. Composed by guitarist Dave Mason, it was disliked by the other three members of the group who felt that it did not represent the band's musical or lyrical style. I walked through a field That just wasn't real With 100 tin soldiers Would shoot at my shoulder And all that I knew was The hole in my shoe that Was letting in water letting in water. I climbed on the back of a giant albatross Which flew through a crack in the cloud To a place where happiness reigned all year round And music played ever so loudly. I started to fall And suddenly woke And the dew on the grass Had stuck to my coat And all that I knew was The hole in my shoe that Was letting in water letting in water . by Traffic. Dave had his own idea about the band, the rest of us had another one - a not-quite-as-sensible one, really, because it wasn't half as commercial. Mason quit the band soon afterwards and Traffic began to develop a less commercial sound, which put an end to their run of hit singles in the UK. However their new material proved popular on American Rock stations and it gave the band a second wind across the Atlantic. Hole In My Shoe. Artist: Traffic. Album: Smiling Phases, 1991. I bought this single when it came out Smiling Phases was the 'B' side. This song was written and sung by Dave Mason, rather than Steve Winwood who did most of the singing for the band. Winwood had success as a musician prior to joining Traffic, becoming the frontman of the Spencer Davis Group at age 15 in 1963. Winwood met drummer Jim Capaldi, guitarist Dave Mason, and multi-instrumentalist Chris Wood when they jammed together at The Elbow Room, a club in Aston, Birmingham. After Winwood left the Spencer Davis Group in April 1967, the quartet formed Traffic
