Short intro

Suzuki is the second studio album by Austrian duo Tosca, released by Studio K7 and G-Stone Recordings in 2000. Unlike many of Tosca's subsequent releases, Suzuki is essentially an instrumental album, with vocal samples integrated throughout, but in such a way that they become a part of the instrumentation. The album is dedicated to the Zen master Shunryu Suzuki. The dedication can be found on the inside of the front cover. It is Dorfmeister's second such project, the first being Kruder & Dorfmeister. Tosca's first album, Opera, was released in 1997 by G-Stone Recordings. Tosca's second album Suzuki takes a lighter, airier approach to the trip-hop terrain that Opera explored. The spare, shimmering title track's delicate synth textures, minimal beats, mellow rhythms, and breathy vocal samples set the tone for the rest of the album's laid-back tracks. Though Orozco, Bass on the Boat, and Ocean Beat are more immediate variations on Tosca's relaxed sound, for the most part, Suzuki offers a locked groove of hypnotic, deeply chilled-out epics. This is the first vinyl repress in 17 years on a much sought-after record. If you're looking to buy one of the originals, have the seller confirm which edition they're sending you first.

This seems to get better every time I listen to it. Great for drifting off to. Tosca and Richard Dorfmeister' best work.

Can anyone tell me is it worth buying the Vinyl version of this album? Is the mastering any different? Does it have the same overdub as the album version?

Actually, I'm still wondering myself. I don't know if it's my hi-fi (which has been uniformly great with all my other records) but it's not the same aural gap as the CD vs LP version of the K&D Sessions. On Suzuki, I find I need to reset my settings because the treble saturates pretty quickly on two/three songs. That said, I'm listening to it as I write and it's got a much "larger" soundstage compared to the CD. I find the saturation odd since Dorfmeister is his own boss and I would think he has a hand in mastering his own albums. In a nutshell: it's bigger, even more bass-y but you need to tweak your sound to appreciate it. Same overdub as the CD version as far as I can tell. If you do get it, get a clean copy because it deserves it, with the all the sonic subtleties involved. Hope I've helped.

A charming record at every listening. It has a certain classical depth that is largely uncommon to average dub downtempo affairs. It's made of original compositions by Dorfmeister and Huebner, soothing, languid, sophisticated and light. A must for all Downtempo fans.
