While Bear centered What For around a self-described indie rock sound, Boo Boo was a new sonic territory for the native South Carolinian. Longer, the 12-track record is also more mellow and its synths are darker & heavier the ruminative Embarcadero is stereotypical of the albums sound and might seem odd to fans of his more accessible, indie-pop works. Released in 2017, Boo Boo is a schizophrenic album that swings between almost formless R&B meanderings and peppy electro-funk, with Bear using space and distance on the former to create chilly atmospheres. Tracks like Embarcadero and Pavement are static and frozen, sounding like Frank Ocean tracks that were stored in a freezer. Bear liberally borrows from subaquatic balladeers like Ocean and James Blake, then ups downs the stakes by removing the emotions. It leaves the ballads on Boo Boo empty at the center, ponderous and not much fun to listen to. Boo Boo was teased by the bubbly roller-rink pop of Girl Like You, and it leads off with an impressive Prince homage, Mirage, complete with pitch-perfect spoken asides. In this mode, Boo Boo plays towards Bears increasing comfort as a lead vocalist and a lead personality, something hard to imagine when he was submerged into the aqueous Dilla homages on Causers of This. But that kind of funk doesnt mesh with the other kind of funk more indicative of Bears mindset during Boo Boos creation.
