Patented in the late '60s, White has been working that same low-down blues grind ever since, taking a long sojourn from recording in the '80s before settling into a regular groove sometime around the time of the new millennium. Usually, these collections of new songs were on tiny labels - including his aptly named Swamp imprint - but 2013's Hoodoo appeared on Yep Roc and received an appropriately larger push than its recent predecessors. Tony Joe White was the fourth album released by Tony Joe White, and the first he released for Warner Bros. It was produced by Peter Asher and recorded between December 112, 1970 at Sounds of Memphis Studio and Ardent Recording Studio, Memphis engineered by Terry Manning. I've always rather liked Tony Joe White but this album is something really special. Swampy, bluesy soul that sometimes makes you want to get up and dance go on - no one is watching. The closest I can get to a description is John Lee Hooker playing with Buddy Guy or Eric Clapton or even Dave Gilmour - but definitely Tony Joe White. Chart Stats. Tony Joe has been making barebones music for as long as I've been alive, but here on Hoodoo I'm actually awestruck at hearing how much sound this man can get out of so few notes. You don't stand at a distance with Tony Joe White, his music wraps itself around you, it's a singular rockin' blues style that's all his own, a blues style that oozes into other genres, one that has caused countless other to find their way to his door, hat in hand, shuffling their feet, hoping for a bit of his midnight.
