Short intro

Maria Marten, or The Murder in the Red Barn is a 1935 British film melodrama film starring Tod Slaughter and Eric Portman. It was directed by Milton Rosmer. It is based on the true story of the 1827 Red Barn Murder. The film is also known as Murder in the Red Barn short UK title. The film is based on the popular 19th-century melodramas about the case and is highly theatrical, with an opening in which all the characters are introduced by a Master of Ceremonies in front of a painted backdrop, but is. With Tod Slaughter, Sophie Stewart, D. Williams, Clare Greet. In 1820's rural England, a young girl is tricked by tales of marriage by a villainous Squire, and when she becomes pregnant, and disappears, a gipsy lad is blamed. Filming Locations: Sound City, Shepperton, Surrey, England, UK. Maria Marten was a young woman living in Suffolk in eastern England who had the misfortune to fall in love with a wastrel. In mid-May 1827, Corder persuaded Maria to meet him at the Red Barn, a local landmark. They were, he said, going to run away to Ipswich to be married. The couple met as arranged but Maria was never seen alive again. The infamous red barn. William Corder also disappeared, but he stayed in touch with Marias family by sending letters that said she was in good health. The melodrama was made into a film in the 1930s starring Tod Slaughter as Corder. Here, Lucinda Lambton visits the museum and tells the story of the murder. A 1932 audio recording originally released on Regal Zonophone Records in 75 rpm. In this melodramatic audio re-telling of the 1827 murder in Polstead, Suffolk, England of Maria Marten, Tod Slaughter stars as her treacherous and murderous lover William Corder, a role he also played both on stage and in the 1935 film MARIA MARTEN, OR THE MURDER IN THE RED BARN. Revisit the infamous Red Barn Murder of 1827. In March 1826, a love affair blossomed between 24-year-old Maria Marten and 22-year-old William Corder. Just one year later, their secret romance ended in slaughter-and became one of the most notorious murder cases in English history. The couple hailed from Polstead, a small town in Suffolk, England. William Corder, the son of a farmer, had a reputation for being a ladies man and troublemaker-he once swindled his father out of his own pigs and helped steal livestock from another farmer. The oft filmed Murder in the Red Barn sometimes referred to as Maria Marten, based on the play of the same name, starring Tod Slaughter as the villainous cad who tricks and murders a young girl after she becomes pregnant. Slaughter has fun as the manipulative murderer, and the film looks nice and at 78 minutes it doesn't overstay it's welcome. It's just a little dull and unmemorable. Interestingly the red barn of the title is now the home of crime writer Ruth Rendell. That fact is more interesting than the film. Review by PUNQ . The acting became too over the top for me. The film is also known as Murder in the Red Barn. For faster navigation, this Iframe is preloading the Wikiwand page for Maria Marten, or The Murder in the Red Barn. The Red Barn was a prominent landmark in Polstead, a quaint corner of Englands Suffolk County countryside. Named for a unique red brick roof, the building on Barnfield Hill was the last known meeting place between Maria Marten and her lover, William Corder. The pair had used the barn as a rendezvous point before apparently eloping to Ipswich on May 18, 1827. Marias family hadnt heard from her in the 11 months since.
