Tired Pony is a music group consisting of Gary Lightbody, Richard Colburn, Iain Archer, Jacknife Lee, Peter Buck, Scott McCaughey and Troy Stewart. Yet despite the full roster, The Place We Ran From sounds more like a Lightbody solo album than a collaborative project. Bucks presence is barely felt, his guitar parts robbed of their trademark jangle and confined to anonymous Everyman riffs, and Jacknife Lee keeps the production fairly simple, a move that fails to spice up the albums watered-down Americana. Tired Pony are Gary Lightbodys brainchild, something he dreamt of doing while on the long haul around the States with his main band. Its a hastily convened combo, which includes REMs Peter Buck on mandolin, and, well, Belle & Sebastians drummer, with the aim of pursuing the stadium-indie singers interest in alt-country. Lightbodys considerable talents, as a conduit for the mass musical experience, will be far better deployed, no doubt, on the next Snow Patrol album.
