The Wasp Factory is the first novel by Scottish writer Iain Banks, published in 1984. Before the publication of The Wasp Factory, Banks had written several science fiction novels that had not been accepted for publication. Banks decided to try a more mainstream novel in the hopes that it would be more readily accepted, and wrote about a psychopathic teenager living on a remote Scottish island. In 2013, acclaimed Australian composer Ben Frost directed and composed a theatrical adaptation of The Wasp Factory, an infamous 1984 novel by Scottish author Iain Banks. The story is told from the point of view of Frank, a psychopathic, misogynistic teenager who lives on a small island. He routinely performs rituals that involve murdering small animals, and he has also killed three children, including his own brother. He often proclaims My greatest enemies are women and the sea. The Wasp Factory is mad but serene, vile but alluring. The plot is strictly nightmarish. Franks brother has escaped from the hospital, and the exact length of a certain knife must be ascertained he murders his cousin Blyth, with an artificial leg, using a venomous snake. Stark vignettes divulge Franks brutality to animals and worse, his obsession with what it means to exist. To be mastered, we learn, the world must be named. Frank can find mastery only in violence, which infests his language. The operas title refers to a maze he makes from a clock where wasps meet various gruesome en. It houses bands from London's early 2000s goth & industrial scenes, in particular artists who blend these styles with drum n' bass, techno, electro and punk. Many of the bands use cyberpunk imagery in their lyrics, artwork and stage performances. The label was formed in 1999 when Lee Chaos was having trouble finding a home for his band The Chaos Engine's second album. He named the label after the eponymous novel by Iain Banks.
