The Weirdness is the fourth studio album by American proto-punk band The Stooges. It was released on 5 March 2007. It was the first studio album of new material The Stooges released since Raw Power in 1973, and is also the final album to feature guitarist Ron Asheton, who died in early 2009. The album features founding members Iggy Pop vocals, Ron Asheton guitar, and Scott Asheton drums along with new band member Mike Watt bass guitar, formerly of Minutemen, and returning guest musician Steve. The Stooges reunite for just their fourth album and first in 34 years. Mike Watt takes over for the late Dave Alexander on bass and Steve Albini serves as engineer. The Weirdness, on the other hand, is practically begging to be dated, with Iggy dropping sore-thumb references to Dr. Phil, intifada 'cause it rhymes with Madonna, the Christian right, a war with no reason, and The New York Times' Sunday Styles section, while celebrating his return rock critics won't like this at all you. On his last solo album, Skull Ring, the Stooges played on only four songs, yet they made his regular backup band sound like hopeless twits. So it was inevitable the Stooges would hit the studio for The Weirdness. You cant tell me this is not a suave thing to do, Iggy yelps in the opener, Trollin, and nobodys going to try. The Weirdness has the feel of a quickie, banged out in a week with engineer Steve Albini. The Stooges dont fret about living up to their rep, which comes as a relief, since only a moron would expect this to touch The Stooges, Fun House or Raw Power. Instead, they keep.
