This legendary ensemble was born in 1910 when Papa Oscar Celestin took over the band at the Tuxedo Dance Hall in Storyville, New Orleans notorious Red Light district. After Celestins death in 1954, banjoguitarist Albert French took over. Alberts grandson, drummer Gerald French runs the current addition of the worlds longest continually functioning jazz band. The music is classic New Orleans jazz, carrying on a tradition that went back over a half century at the time of this 1964 recording. In 2008, Gramophone, one of the world's most respected classical music publications, took on the monumental task of ranking the world's best orchestras. Founded in 1949, this relatively young orchestra has had only five chief conductors: Eugen Jochum, Rafael Kubelík, Sir Colin Davis, Lorin Maazel, and Mariss Jansons. Because the group is a radio orchestra, every nuance can be picked up by the microphones the musicians must be highly technical and emphatic for every note on the page. Founded in 1896, the Czech Philharmonic has won a variety of awards. Notable past conductors include Rafael Kubelik and Vaclav Neumann.
