The Thoughts of Emerlist Davjack is the 1968 debut album by the English psychedelic rock and progressive rock group the Nice. It is considered one of the first albums in the latter genre. The name Emerlist Davjack is a pseudonym created by combining the last names of the four members of the group Keith Emerson, David O'List, Brian Davison, and Lee Jackson. The Thoughts Of Emerlist Davjack is one of rock's more underrated and overlooked efforts, despite the debut presence of keyboard wiz Keith Emerson. Prog fans think it's too psych, and psych fans think it's too prog. The album is best described as a hardcore psychedelic effort which points in the direction of prog, but all genre labels aside, this is highly inventive and powerful music. In fact, outside of Emerson, Lake And Palmer's far more mannered self-titled debut, Davjack is my favorite Keith Emerson album, for on no other release does he sound a. The title is of course a concoction of the names of the four band members, and while they are apparently given equal billing, it is perhaps significant that the part of Emerson's name appears first. Of course it's a little out of date nowadays but it suits this very happy-light song. The 'who made the 1st prog album' debate argued with increasingly shrill protestations of certitude is now a game that we should all be heartily tired of. Judging by the adolescent imbecility of some of the propositions on offer, we would just as well conclude that Progressive Rock originated in some primordial soup of an acquired taste, and get on with enjoying music that we care about.
