New York City figured so prominently in Lou Reed's music for so long that it's surprising it took him until 1989 to make an album simply called New York, a set of 14 scenes and sketches that represents the strongest, best-realized set of songs of Reed's solo career. While Reed's 1982 comeback, The Blue Mask, sometimes found him reaching for effects, New York's accumulated details and deft caricatures hit bull's-eye after bull's-eye for 57 minutes, and do so with an easy stride and striking lyrical facility. Lou Reed is the debut solo studio album by American musician Lou Reed, released in April 1972 by RCA Records, two years after he left the Velvet Underground. It was produced by Richard Robinson and Reed and features London session musicians as Reed's backing band, two of whom, Rick Wakeman and Steve Howe, were from the British progressive rock band Yes. Wakeman recalled that during the recording sessions, the lights had to be out so nobody could see. The album was recorded in Morgan Studios, London. The New Lou Reeds - Screwed. true true. Write a Review. Lumbering and bluesy, I Felt Like Woody Allen feels more modern than the rest of the album, with it's alert guitars and fluctuating volume. It's not so much that his music isn't listenable it's more that his ambition seems to reach no further than namedropping - the music can be lumped without much difficulty with the latter-day white blues that has become so prevalent in the past three or four years. And the Reeds' cause is not advanced by songs like Teenage Metalhead, which idiotically pays tribute to the most pointless, embarrassing and small-minded tendencies of rock-n-roll. I can't say that I hate this record, but perhaps the unkindest cut for Screwed is that the answer to the million-dollar question does this rock is a resounding sortaRelated to The New Lou Reeds - Screwed
