Plays Pretty for Baby is the second album by the American punk rock band Nation of Ulysses. Tracks 14-16 on the CD are not on the original album, and are taken from the 7 EP Birth of the Ulysses Aesthetic. The Sound of Jazz to Come and 50,000 Watts of Goodwill reference the opening track of A Love Supreme by John Coltrane in their respective openings, while the former references the similarly titled Ornette Coleman album, The Shape of Jazz to Come. The Nation Of Ulysses was a punk band from Washington, D. consisting of Ian Svenonius VocalsTrumpet, Steve Kroner Lead Guitar, Tim Green Rhythm Guitar, Steve Gamboa Bass, James Canty Drums. The band formed in the spring of 1988 drawing inspiration from MC5's mix of revolutionary rhetoric and rock music. They released their first EP The Sound of Young America jointly on Dischord and K Records and further recordings included 13-Point Program To Destroy America 1991, and Plays Pretty For Baby 1992, both of which were released on Dischord Records. This is a revolution, of both thought and sound. The Nation of Ulysses is unmatchable by any band ever they have created a dialectic, a movement, and a youthful assault of the mind and senses. Like Greek to a Caucasian child, most will never understand even partially the spirit that lurks in these movements for it is about something higher than mere music. The Nation of Ulysses should probably be remembered a little bit more. Sure, Fugazi came out at the same time and was arguably a more digestible version, but there was something about Nation of Ulysses that really caught my eye when my dad introduced me to them when he first learned I had an infatuation with Fugazi back in the day. Maybe it was because they wore nice suits and added in weird Jazz jams in the middle of their post-hardcore noise explosions.
