The original stoic mynah bird, star of Inki and the Minah Bird Warner Bros. Cartoon hopped to the melody of Hebrides Overture. But here's The Mynah Birds were a Canadian R&B band formed in Toronto, Ontario, that was active from 1964 to 1967. Although the band never released an album, it is notable as featuring a number of musicians, such as Rick James and Neil Young, who went on to have successful careers in rock, folk rock and funk. Over its short lifespan, the group featured many members in its many different configurations. Its most memorable lineup included Rick James, Neil Young, Bruce Palmer, Rickman Mason and John Taylor. A softbill species, this bird is native to Africa, India, southeast Asia, and Indonesia. It has been widely introduced and now lives in most of the world in the wild. In ancient Greece, the mynah bird was an aristocractic pet. The word mynah comes from the Hindu word maina, and the Sanskrit word madana, which means delightful and fun-loving. The bird was a success as a bug killer, but the territorial common mynah frequently displaced native birds and depleted their food supply. A third variety, the Bali mynah, is a rare, critically endangered species. Fewer than 100 Bali mynahs exist in the wild. The Mynah Birds grew out of a 1964 group called the Sailorboys, fronted by Jimmy Livingstone and also including guitarist Ian Goble, drummer Rick Cameron, organist Goldy McJohn and bass player Nick St. Nicholas, soon joined by Rick James. Over its short lifespan, the group featured a large number of artists in its many different configurations. After leaving The Mynah Birds in April 1965, Jimmy Livingstone joined The Muddy Yorks and then The Just Us, which evolved into Livingstone's Journey through The Tripp. But thatâs not the end of the Mynah Birds story.
