Early in 1948 the Orpheus combined with the Morriston United Choir. The Orpheus began a long series of appearances on the . s Welsh Rarebit programmes and it was during this series that the members of the choir and the programmes resident comedian, Harry Secombe, forged a strong bond of friendship. As a result of these broadcasts the Orpheus made its first records for Columbia. Yet despite the popularity of the broadcasts and the records, when the Orpheus entered the Pwllheli Eisteddfod in 1955 the choir was the only competitor in this field. The Morriston Orpheus Choir, based in Morriston, near Swansea, Wales, is a male voice choir, one of the best-known in the UK. The Choir was formed on April 23, 1935, by Ivor E. Sims and in its early days concentrated primarily on competitions and local concerts. In 1937, the Choir achieved its first success at the Royal National Eisteddfod in Machynlleth, going on to win at the National on six further occasions. The choir does not presently sing in competitions, preferring to concentrate on concert.
