The Marshall Tucker Band is an American rock band from Spartanburg, South Carolina. Noted for incorporating blues, country and jazz into its eclectic sound, The Marshall Tucker Band helped establish the Southern rock genre in the early 1970s. While the band had reached the height of its commercial success by the end of the decade, it has recorded and performed continuously under various lineups for 45 years. Lead vocalist Doug Gray remains the only original member still active with the band. Carolina Dreams marks a retreat from the more pronounced country leanings of Long Hard Ride to the more successful country-tinged pop-rock of Heard It In a Love Song and Fly Like an Eagle. The Marshall Tucker Band came out of Spartanburg, South Carolina a center with nearby Greenville of the Upstate region, and a city with a mill-town heritage that, by 1977, was already in decline. Spartanburg and its environs are worlds away from the coastal gentility of Charleston Pat Conroy, in one of his books, described the upcountry of South Carolina as a place that combines the Bible Belt, sand-lot baseball, knife fights under the bleachers.
