The Dells were an American R&B vocal group. Formed in high school in 1952 by founding members Marvin Junior, Verne Allison, Johnny Funches, Chuck Barksdale, and Mickey and Lucius McGill, under the name the El-Rays. This is the first compilation to feature all 17 of the group's Billboard Hot 100 singles. The album was intended to update and expand upon History: America's Greatest Hits, the group's all-time best-selling album. It includes two new tracks released exclusive to this collection. This was the group's first album to chart since 1984's Perspective. Their first greatest-hits collection had been issued in 1969, and they'd recorded the Come Together soundtrack for Apple in 1971 then there was the fine, topical, Freedom Means set for Cadet in 1971. In 1972, the Dells issued this unlikely masterpiece. Whoever heard of recording an album of another singer's greatest hits, and a female singer at that Nobody. And perhaps that's why it works
