Short intro

Between Planets. Part of the problem was the actual studio setup while soon-to-be superstar producerengineer Alan Moulder did a great job on the sound, finding a way to mix thick guitar rumbles without sounding uncommercial, the fact was that the band was really just the brothers at this point. The Jesus and Mary Chain's third studio album was a mixed bag, a touch rougher and more aggressive-sounding than Darklands, but still not the equivalent of Psychocandy for sheer kicks. The Jesus and Mary Chain - Blues From A Gun. This one too turned out to contain the same light opera. The group on this record is basically the core duo of brothers William and Jim Reid with a drum machine providing percussion and even a synthesizer filling in on bass guitar. The Jesus and Mary Chain - Coast To Coast. The Jesus and Mary Chain - Head On. Richard Thomas who filled in as the touring drummer drums on Gimme Hell. When I got it back home and tried playing it, I found that the tape did not contain that album at all but what to my ears sounded like light opera or as I referred to it at the time, Harry Secombe. The band also heavily used a drum machine for the majority of the album to make up for their lack of a drummer. The Jesus and Mary Chain - Her Way Of Praying. The Jesus and Mary Chain - Here Comes Alice. 12 tracks 43:19. Для меня он лучше даже Darklands. Thomas drummed on Gimme Hell and was a former member of Dif Juz. Of the first five albums, "Automatic" remains more cheesy but just as great fun listening to, serving as a perfect middle ground introduction to the group's trademark flare, combining their past, present (and future).

Partially short of ideas leaning on "Darklands", the experimental side of "Automatic" covers a great deal though, its primary element being the punching drum machine, shaping the material into a merciless fire engine. The cult hit "Blues From a Gun" is its ultimate centrepiece, while highlights also include "Halfway To Crazy" (sadly left off the single track), "Take It" and "UV Ray" to name a few, instantly catching the ear with their upbeat charm while "Coast To Coast" is way bigger a rocker (easily confused with something off a Billy Idol album, think in terms of "Cradle Of Love") than "Head On" ever was (the latter respectively covered by Pixies a few years after, and to much greater effect). "Gimme Hell" is a great closer (with Dif Juz's Richard Thomas on drums), altogether a hint at what was to come on the stunning follow-up "Honey's Dead". (The cassette and CD offer two extra tracks, a nice ballad "Drop" and the even more abrasive variant of "UV Ray" - called "Sunray").

On the downside plays "Here Comes Alice" which always sounded uninspired and remains one of their weakest songs (its title being a great teaser to press play, only to realise the wasted potential of a track it should have been), while "Her Way Of Praying" audibly borrows from "Blues From a Gun" - a great melodic hook halfway down the song but also more of a filler track despite its edgy, upbeat arrangement. Same goes for "Between Planets" - while having all the right ingredients, it is another re-write borrowing simultaneously from the two principal fast rockers (aforementioned "Coast To Coast" and the significantly anemic "Head On").

Fun to revisit on occasion, remembering your teenage years when "Automatic" meant the universe and was played to death. From a 30 years time distance though, some of the songs sound embarrassingly dated.
