Their line-up on their first album, Scratchin' the Surface, produced by the 19-year-old Head Of A&R for Liberty Records, Mike Batt released in November 1968, consisted of McPhee as singer and guitarist bassist Peter Cruickshank born 2 July 1945, in Calcutta, Ken Pustelnik on drums born 13 March 1946 on a farm near Blairgowrie, Angus. Crosscut Saw is the 9th album by the Groundhogs, it was released in February 1976, and marked quite a big change from their early 70's stuff in style but especially in production. Unfortunately just when it seemed the band were onto a new road with a fresh new sound and approach, Mcphee decided to put the band on hold in the end of the year after Black Diamond was released, that will last for almost a decade until their next release in 1985. Crosscut Saw And Black Diamond, both released in '76, were done in a period when McPhee actually wanted to bill himself as a solo act, like Rory Gallagher did after Taste split, but was advised against the move by his mananger.
