The sophomore release by the Gentlemen Losers finds the brother team of Samu and Ville Kuukka again happily at work creating a contemplative series of instrumentals that readily mix and match a variety of guitar-based styles. There's as much a mid-'70s Pink Floyd zone on display - as Ballad of Sparrow Young shows in a restrained way - as there is the kind of gentle focused yearning one might expect from the Durutti Column. This record is a bit of an enigma. Coming to the band fresh without hearing their previous outing I had no preconceptions, and it is really a unique listen. One day it might hit the sweet spot and then another it'll sound like your 12 year old music group jamming in their bedroom. It has a sparse, almost naive arrangement style, and the guitar playing comes somewhere between improvised and half-composed. What it gives up in style it strives to compensate for in substance and atmosphere (I hate to use the word "ambient" as it is in danger of becoming the most over-employed adjective in the English language in relation to emotive and beatless music, but this record warrants the tag, albeit with simple folky instruments.

It sounds as if it's aiming to replace the Neil Young soundtrack to 'Dead Man'. It doesn't really come close, but then again not much does when it comes to Neil Young's ST for the film. That's how much I rate it. As often happens, those striving for the heights can have problems trying to make the ascent, sometimes with tragic consequences. Hopefully they'll have better luck, and fewer fatalities, next time they try.
