The Flying Lizards were an experimental English new wave band, formed in 1976. They are best known for their eccentric cover version of Barrett Strong's Money featuring Deborah Evans-Stickland on lead vocals, which reached the UK and US record charts in 1979. The Flying Lizards' first album unwittingly followed one of the greatest traditions of '50s and '60s pop - take a hit single, surround it with a whole bunch of filler less interesting than the hit, and presto You have an album. Too bad Cunningham didn't prove to have as much vision as, say, Count Five or the Royal Guardsmen, who did better with the quickie album concept than he did. But when The Flying Lizards came out of nowhere with it's covers of 'Money' and 'Summertime Blues', they were ironically seriously accepted by dance clubs and radio stations. And the initial album literally stunned people with it's opening Mandelay Song, to Russian and Reggae influences. Cunnigham and Deborah Kerr were the most unlikely stars to help christen 'New Wave'.
