Then Kinda Free is the sixth studio album from Australian band The Drones, and their final one till date before going on hiatus. Having grown tired with the more rock-oriented sound of the band up until that point, frontman Gareth Liddiard became fascinated with both vintage and modern electronic equipment - ranging from drum machines and samplers to the Teenage Engineering OP-1 synthesizer - in conceiving the album's sound. Its genre-defying musical style has been described as visceral and ominous. Feelin Kinda Free is the seventh studio album by Australian rock band The Drones. Frontman Gareth Liddiard says the title is aptly named because were hippies now. The record is really out there. Id been listening to really old four-track tapes from the 90s that me and Rui made, and theyre all totally bizarre, and actually really similar to this record. The seventh full-length release for the Australian rock band sees the return of original drummer Christian Strybosch. The Drones's seventh album is a masterclass in genre-defying rock. No prisoners are taken. The Drones are by no means a one-man band, however almost every album has been a joint writing venture and Feelin Kinda Free continues the trend. Describing the album in the press release as a bad trip you can dance to probably says it better than I ever could graphically interweaving lyrics and all sorts of guitar dissonance and stomping rhythms are twisted around gurgling keys and flashing synth noise to create an album that is as multi-layered as it is immediate. Feelin Kinda Free doubles down on the darker aspects of 2013's critically acclaimed I See Seaweed, but where the former more or less adhered to the bluesy, alt-rock malevolence of album's past, the latter eschews traditional pop architecture in favor of something far more feral and unpredictable.
