Short intro
What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits is the fourth studio album by American rock band The Doobie Brothers. The album was released on February 1, 1974, by Warner Bros. Tom Johnston's Another Park, Another Sunday was chosen to be the album's first single. It's about losing a girl, stated Johnston. I wrote the chords and played it on acoustic, and then Ted had some ideas for it, like running the acoustic guitar through a Leslie. The song did moderately well on the charts. Actually, in some respects, given the range of instruments employed here, including an autoharp courtesy of Arlo Guthrie and viola, the songs on the original LP's first side suffer somewhat from a sameness that makes What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits a little less interesting than the albums that preceded it. What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits is one of the stronger DB albums, thanks in part to some truly fine songwriting. I've always considered Black Water to be one of the Bros' more satisfying hit singles in contrast to the overly repetitive Listen to the Music, but there are some other great tracks here, too, including Song to See You Through, Eyes of Silver and the lyrically Stones-esque Tell Me What You Want And I'll Give You What You. There's a reason why many domestic Doobie Brothers CDs are available for - compared to the sound quality this disc has, the domestic releases sound worse than a cheap, cassette tape . After all, What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits was created in the usual way, with the Doobie Brothers gathered in the studio to expand on unfinished individual ideas. We basically wrote whatever came to mind, co-founder Tom Johnston told the Courier Post in 2014, and brought it to our rehearsals to work up. What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits which arrived on Feb. 1, 1974 expanded to include four songs from fellow co-founder Pat Simmons, bassist Tiran Porter's spacey Flying Cloud and the band-written Road Angel. The Doobie Brothers were inducted into The Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2004. In 1969, singer, guitarist and songwriter Tom Johnston and drummer John Hartman formed the nucleus of what would become The Doobie Brothers. Skip Spence of Moby Grape and formerly of Jefferson Airplane introduced them to one another after Har read more.
