The Dave Brubeck Quartet is a jazz album released by The Dave Brubeck Quartet in several iterations between 1952 and 1962. The album was first released in 1952, on the Fantasy Records label, as Fantasy 10 LP 3-7. The tracks were recorded in September 1952 at the Surf Club in Hollywood, California. In place of Quartet regulars Bob Bates and Joe Dodge, are Wyatt Bull Ruther on bass and, depending on the track, either Herb Barman or Lloyd Davis on drums. The liner notes were written by Barry Ulanov. This release presents two rarely heard Newport performances. Brubeck organized the Dave Brubeck Quartet in 1951, with Paul Desmond on alto saxophone. In 1956 Brubeck hired drummer Joe Morello, who had been working with Marian McPartland Morello's presence made possible the rhythmic experiments that were to come. In 1958 African-American bassist Eugene Wright joined for the group's U. Department of State tour of Europe and Asia. The group visited Poland, Turkey, India, Sri Lanka then Ceylon, Pakistan, Iran and Iraq on behalf of the U. In 1959, the Dave Brubeck Quartet recorded Time Out, an album about which the record label was enthusiastic but which they were nonetheless hesitant to release.
