Short intro

The Dave Brubeck Quartet is a jazz album released by The Dave Brubeck Quartet in several iterations between 1952 and 1962. The album was first released in 1952, on the Fantasy Records label, as Fantasy 10 LP 3-7. The tracks were recorded in September 1952 at the Surf Club in Hollywood, California. In place of Quartet regulars Bob Bates and Joe Dodge, are Wyatt Bull Ruther on bass and, depending on the track, either Herb Barman or Lloyd Davis on drums. The liner notes were written by Barry Ulanov. The Duke - The Dave Brubeck Quartet, Paul Desmond. The album was intended as an experiment using musical styles Brubeck discovered abroad while on a United States Department of State sponsored tour of Eurasia, such as when he observed in Turkey a group of street musicians performing a traditional Turkish folk song that was played in 98 time, a rare meter for Western music. Columbia president Goddard Lieberson took a chance to underwrite and release Time Out. This 1958 set by the Dave Brubeck Quartet comes from the Newport Jazz Festival on a day which served as a tribute to Duke Ellington, with each band playing a set primarily drawn from Ellington's vast repertoire. Brubeck's The Duke, an elegant tribute to Ellington that showcases Desmond's lyrical alto and the exciting finale of C Jam Blues the latter spotlighting Morello are also highlights. Main page.
