The Czars' reflective, sometimes jazz-tinged alternative poprock is a lot like a day that is overcast without being flat-out rainy some rays of sunlight manage to break through the clouds, but the clouds still dominate the sky. And the Czars' work isn't growing any less melancholy on Goodbye, the Denver band's third full-length album. This 2004 release isn't an exercise in total hopelessness Czars frontman John Grant is diligently searching for reasons to be optimistic, but unfortunately, he isn't finding them. It helps that Grant is blessed with the voice of a sad-eyed angel. The gentle, irresistible gallop of Paint the Moon is the Czars at their most instinctively melodic. Elsewhere, they suggest Robert Wyatt remixed by Timbaland the title track and conjure the sepulchral stillness of church music The Hymn. Goodbye isn't simply a narcotic swoon of melancholy, however: I Am the Man . you can't h. Stream Goodbye by The Czars from desktop or your mobile device. It's just that the evocations of other groups and artists which their music presents is strange. The Czars cut two albums, BeforeBut Longer in 2001 and The Ugly People Vs. The Beautiful People, also in 2001 on Raymonde's Bella Union label. Now Goodbye has followed, and apparently has only received a release in the UK for now.
