Jazz 625 was a BBC jazz programme featuring performances by British and American musicians, first broadcast between April 1964 and August 1966. It was created by Terry Henebery, a clarinetist recruited in 1963 as one of the new producers for BBC Two. The title of the show referred to the fact that BBC2 was broadcast on 625-lines UHF rather than the 405-lines VHF system then used by the other channels. Other programme series included Theatre 625 and Cinema 625. The theme tune for the show was written. Concluding part of Cannonball Adderley Sextet's live set for BBC2's 625 show, recorded in May 1964. Includes such numbers as 'The Weaver', 'Sweet Georgia Bright' and 'Unit Seven'. Its not called Jazz 625 though so look for the London Concert 1964 and you'll be getting this on DVD and more. The picture quality is reasonable for the first five tracks and then not very good for the remainder. I don't understand why its not called Jazz 625, there must be some copyright problem. Whatever the reasons either this video, or that DVD, catches Oscar Peterson with one of his best ever trios and it should be in your collection if you are a Jazz Piano fan. Read more. Jazz Icons: Cannonball Adderley boasts two beautifully filmed concerts from one of the most celebrated sextets in jazz history, captured at the top of their game. Cannonball Adderley alto sax, Nat Adderley cornet and the masterful Yusef Lateef tenor sax, flute, oboe, provide a massive three-horn frontline attack, while the stellar rhythm section featuring a pre-Weather Report Joe Zawinul piano, Sam Jones bass and Louis Hayes drums fuel the songs with a deep infectious swing. Originally from Tampa, Florida, Adderley moved to New York in the mid-1950s. His nickname derived originally from cannibal, an honorific title imposed on him by high school colleagues as a tribute to his fast eating capacity. By the end of 1960s, Adderley's playing began to reflect the influence of the electric jazz, avant-garde, and Miles Davis' experiments on the album Bitches Brew. On his albums from this period, such as Accent on Africa 1968 and The Price You Got to Pay to Be Free 1970, he began doubling on soprano saxophone, showing. Jazz 625 was devised as part of a package of programmes chosen to launch the BBCs second channel in 1964. The enigmatic title was chosen to reflect the upgrade from the 405-line VHF signal to the 625 lines of UHF offered by the new channel - the high-definition TV of the time. Jazz was among the subjects thought to be culturally appropriate for such a venture, and Jazz 625 like the parallel strands of Theatre 625 and Cinema 625 - was designed to express a higher purpose.
