Short intro

She Was Only a Grocer's Daughter is the third album from British band The Blow Monkeys, originally released in 1987. The album title was a reference to Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Margaret Thatcher, whose Conservative government was unpopular with left wing, pro-Labour Party music acts of the 1980s including The Blow Monkeys, some of whom joined the Red Wedge movement as part of their political activism. The Blow Monkeys is a British pop and blue eyed soul group that is best known for its 80s work, particularly the international top 20 pop hit Digging Your Scene. With their snappy dress sense and androgynous image, the band drew comparisons to new wave and art rock contemporaries such as The Style Council and Roxy Music. Fronted by lead singer and songwriter Dr. Robert born Bruce Robert Howard, in Haddington, Scotland, on 2 May 1961, the group formed in 1981 upon Howard's return to the U. after spending his teen years in Australia. Yugoslav vinyl sound fantastic. Unlike the album that doesn't show anything except "It Doesn't Have To Be This Way".It's amazing how this band survived all these years on a small couple of hits.
"A small couple of hits"?! Well if it's just for the value of their hits, The Blow Monkeys had way more than "a small couple" of songs that made them famous / notorious - "Choices", their first such collection from 1989, clearly shows the evolution of the band, with gems which are hardly "a few". Sad to read a comment from a person who sounds like lazily listening to "She Was Only A Grocer's Daughter" only to refer to the obvious single as the only thing of value - "Celebrate (The Day After You)" and "Beautiful Child" to name a few are stunning bits of music off the album - needless to say, Curtis Mayfield performed with the group at the time! One Marius De Vries also appears on the record! The arrangements the group made at their prime, meaning their mid-20s (!!!), is equally stunning a fact, so dismissing them on the back of a "hit" is downright ignorant... It is understandable they might not be everyone's cup of tea, but if you try and actually listen to it more than "once", the songs continue to glow with a rewarding shine... The Blow Monkeys were/are an excellent group of musicians, super-skilled and playful, evolving with each next release, and lyrical wit a few such bands from their generation can match. "Unlike the album that doesn't show anything except 'It Doesn't Have To Be This Way'", try and listen to their b-sides, especially the entire first album ("Limping For a Generation"), which is a downright masterpiece to start with. Then maybe you'll reconsider and value their work a bit more. Because this group deserves it.
