Like many babyboomers, I originally heard the Capitol Records release of 'Rubber Soul'. I still regard that version as superior to the Parlophone release. The opening track 'I've Just Seen A Face' sets the acoustic mood for an intimate listening experience which gently segues into 'Norwegian Wood.' Moreover, as Side 2 opens with John Lennon's cascading ballad 'It's Only Love' the following track 'Girl' represents the natural progression of a relationship gone wrong. The Parlophone version, on the other hand, opens with 'Drive My Car' a rollicking number to be sure. Yet, the lack of symmetry from that piece into 'Norwegian Wood' is almost grating. Side 2 is even more of a jolt, opening with 'What Goes On' with Ringo exhibiting his country vocal sound into John's 'Girl.' The overall effect is of a collection of songs instead of an overall, satisfying whole. I always associate 'Drive My Car', 'Nowhere Man', 'If I Needed Someone' and 'What Goes On' with Capitol's 'Yesterday..And Today' LP. Fortunately, I have a 5 disc changer. So when it's time to give 'Rubber Soul' another listen, I simply add 'I've Just Seen A Face' and 'It's Only Love' from the 'Help' CD and remove the aforementioned four tracks to bring back the 'Rubber Soul' that I remember.
It still sticks in my craw how Capitol Records insisted on eleven tracks for each American release (up to 'Sgt. Pepper') of a Beatles album. The Parlophone version of 'Revolver' clearly reveals it to be superior to 'Sgt. Pepper'! I suppose this might have something to do with 'greed' (let's call it 'anal-retentive marketing') on Capitol's part. I have fond memories of all the American releases, but I try to collect as many of the Parlophone issues because it's easily the correct way to hear the Beatles evolve as a group. Did they ever offer Beatles in mono cds that you could buy separately? As I recall, they were packaged all together at a high price, and I wasn't particularly interested, because I already have the original vinyl of the American releases in near mint shape. But did they market the albums separately? Seems to me they could have sold more cds had they offered customers the choice. I'm still trying to find a sane reason for the complicated 'region coding' of DVDs. Tip: You want to play all region DVDs...they sell all region DVD players on the internet...but not at 'Best Buy'.
