Past Masters Volume Two collates all The Beatles various singles, b-sides and rarities not included on the original albums between December 1965 and March 1970. In the 1960s it was customary for groups to release standalone singles indeed, it was considered bad form to issue songs which were already available elsewhere. As a result, The Beatles released a number of tracks on singles which were unavailable elsewhere. When EMI sought to standardise The Beatles canon in 1987, their UK albums were issued worldwide. Past Masters contains 33 non-album Beatles tracks - ranging from classic A-sides to hits sung in German - two CDs were released in 1988 called Past Masters Volume One and Volume Two. Although originally featuring a combination of mono and stereo versions, the remastered Past masters compilation contains only the stereo mixes, if they exist. Many of the band's best known and most acclaimed songs are present, and the collection illustrates the vast amount of work that was created in little over seven years. All of the aforementioned are staples in the LennonMcCartney canon, and while George Harrison's two contributions aren't as familiar, The Inner Light is arguably his best Indian excursion and Old Brown Shoe is a charmingly jaunty tune that points toward his solo career.
