Sloop John B closes the first side of Pet Sounds, an album commonly interpreted as a romantic and introspective concept album. This decision is argued by many to contradict the album's lyrical flow, as author Jim Fusilli explains: It's anything but a reflective love song, a stark confession or a tentative statement of independence like the other songs on the album. Sloop John B is the seventh track on The Beach Boys' Pet Sounds album and was also a single which was released in 1966 on Capitol Records. It was originally a traditional West Indies folk song, possibly recorded earliest by The Weavers under the title Wreck of the John B, the song taken from a collection by Carl Sandburg 1927. Alan Lomax made a field recording of the song in Nassau, 1935, under the title Histe Up the John B. This recording appears on the album Bahamas 1935: Chanteys And Anthems From Andros And Cat Island. The song was read more. Sloop John B was mixed down twice, while all the other songs on the album had at most one mix-down. In Paul Williams' Outlaw Blues, David Marks said that Sloop John B was made before all the other Pet Sounds songs, and was an attempt to give the Beach Boys a more masculine, virile image. At the time, Wilson was under fire from critics for making wimp-rock. Barry from Sauquoit, NyOn March 27th 1966, Sloop John B by the Beach Boys entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at position 68 five weeks later on May 1st, 1966 it would peak at 3 for 1 week and spent 11 weeks on the Top 100. It reached 1 in Norway, Sweden, and the Netherlands. The Beach Boys version of Sloop John B. was ranked 271 276 in the 2017 version on Rolling Stones list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. While the songs music exhibits the typical surfer vibes the Beach Boys are known for, its lyrical content sheds a rather critical light on the tropical island motive often implemented and glorified by the band in their songs. This possible self-reflection ties in with the general theme of melancholy throughout the album, showing a more mature approach to life and to song-writing. Expand .
