Musica Antiqua Köln was an early music group that was founded in 1973 by Reinhard Goebel and fellow students from the Conservatory of Music in Cologne. Musica Antiqua Köln devoted itself largely to the performance of the music of the 17th and 18th centuries. The group recorded extensively for Archiv Produktion and received numerous awards, including the Grand Prix International du Disque, Gramophone Award, Diapason dor, and Grammy nominations. His large-scale cantata Ino was probably composed for performance in a new heated concert hall in Hamburg. Telemann greatly admired the achievements of a new generation of talented German writers and poets, and the author of the cantata text, Carl Wilhelm Ramler 17251798 had attracted his attention several years earlier. Ramlers Ino tells the story of Inos desperate attempt to save her son from her husband Athamas, who has been driven insane and is intent on killing him. With its perfect blend of drama and poetry, narration and reflection, and emotion and structural control, it was the finest secular text that Telemann set to music. Musica Antiqua Köln.
