Full Album: Taj Mahal & Toumani Diabate Kulanjan 1999. Two Masters Reveal The Roots of American Blues in West Africa. Together with a Mahal is the debut album by American blues guitarist and vocalist Taj Mahal. Recorded in 1967 with backing musicians that included guitarists Jesse Ed Davis and Ry Cooder, it was released by Columbia Records in 1968. The album contains mostly updated versions of early blues songs by Sleepy John Estes, Robert Johnson, and Sonny Boy Williamson II. Also included is Taj Mahal's blues rock adaptation of Blind Willie McTell's Statesboro Blues, which inspired the popular Allman Brothers Band recording. This informal collaboration between veteran American bluesman Mahal and Malian kora it's a 21-stringed lute-like instrument master Diabate was recorded in an Athens, GA, studio with a sextet of West African string instrumentalists and vocalists. It was nominated for Best Contemporary Blues Album at the 2009 Grammy Awards but lost out to Dr. John and the Lower 911's City That Care Forgot. The release of Maestro marked the 40th anniversary of Taj Mahal's career as a recording artist
