Short intro

Album 2006 10 Songs. Electronic 2006. free to Svalastog Woodwork The Wood Metal Friction, Snow tracer and more. 10 tracks 45:25. True story, as told by Per Henrik Svalastog himself: I found an old Norwegian zither laying around my grandfathers barn in the mountains. It appeared that he had been a fiddler before he lost all his fingers at the sawmill and convertet to become a hardcore pietist setting down a prohibition against music, dancing, card-playing and television. That made me want to convert as well, from digital medias to real playing. From electronica to folk music. Back to the sources. Heritage and environ. Label: Rune Grammofon Release Date: 1st August 2006. Woodwork Tracklisting. The Wood Metal Friction. Original Mix. Snow Tracer. Reconnecting Joints. Mouse Tracking. Centerline Reminder. Cow Goat Goat. Svalastog: Woodwork album review by John Kelman, published on November 25, 2006. On Tromsø native Per Henrik Svalastog's Woodwork, the Norwegian zither and cow and ram's horns are fed through a computer. This is simple music, more reliant on spare but compelling rhythms than harmonic shifts or strong melodies. Woodwork, 2006. Snow Tracer, 06:24. Reconnecting Joints, 04:52. Mouse Tracking, 05:58. Reforestation, 04:27. Cow Goat Goat, 03:17. Svalastog Woodwork Review. Released 2006. Well, this is the way that Woodwork begins, but very soon, Svalastog is introducing a range of bowel-end basslines and weightily cyclic rhythms. These patterns are cranky and ratchety, but with a strong sense of purpose. They're never too regimented, always leaving room for the odd abstracted stretch. Residing in Oslo, Svalastog has already made three albums with the Information trio, the most recent Biomekano also available on the Rune Grammofon label. He found an old harpelik zither in grandfather Svalastog's barn, up in the mountains of his Tromso birthplace. This album sounds like vintage country music that was made with electronic instrumentation, in some weird future southern hill-billy tech future. Very strange and unique indeed. Glitched out zither, guitars, melting banjo and other things fill out the pastiche of sounds.

A marked departure from his other two albums, but an incredible spiky and groovy work and one of my all time Rune Grammofon releases. Nicely packaged and presented also. Very loop-based and in some senses quite straightforward in the beat making, that said it's a grower and it's all about the zither aesthetics, chopped, diced and mathematically rearranged. It's a great sonic treat.
