On December 20, 1999 Sunna went into Systems Two in Brooklyn along with Tony Malaby, Drew Gress and Scott McLemore. It was an incredibly productive session which produced enough material for Mindful and the newly released Songs from Iceland. Sunna Gunnlaugs work has received significant critical acclaim since her 2000 release Mindful was selected among the top 10 albums of the year by the Washington Post. Her 2003 release 'live in Europe reached top 10 on both Canadian and US jazz radio charts. Her 2010 release The Dream jumped to number 2 on the Canadian radio charts and reached number 20 on the US CMJ radio charts. Sunna Gunnlaugs reaffirms that assesment on her latest album, Ancestry which features her working trio fellow Icelander, bassist Þorgrimur Jónsson and long-time cohort, Scott McLemore on drums with the addition of the Finnish trumpet player Veneri Pohjola.
