Short intro
Street Gospel is the first album by the American West Coast hip hop artist Suga Free. It was released on June 24, 1997. The album was produced by DJ Quik. Notable guests include Playa Hamm, Hi-C, and DJ Quik. The album was also released in a clean version, which is out of print. It peaked at 37 on the Billboard Hot 100. Suga Free's debut album Street Gospel is a competent collection of street-level, hardcore G-funk, highlighted by DJ Quik's savvy production. Although Suga Free is a strong rapper, he isn't particularly distinctive, and he's often given pedestrian backing music, which makes the album a little tedious. Still, he's charismatic enough to make the best songs, like the single If You Stay Ready, powerful and that nearly makes the album worthwhile. Track Listing. Street Gospel. Blessed with a wholly original style that incorporates mellow singing, schizophrenic cadences, and lightning-fast, E-40-esque slanguage, he has amassed a devoted cult following while never really breaking through to the mainstream.
